Government Arts & Science College, Calicut was established in 1964 and is affiliated to the University of Calicut. It is one of the biggest government colleges in the Malabar region of Kerala and operates with the explicit goal of disseminating knowledge to students from all sections of the society. The College, situated in the northern part of Calicut city, is hosted in a lush green campus of more than twenty acres with a rich diversity of plant life. The College runs twelve undergraduate programs and eight post-graduate programmes in different arts and science disciplines. The College also hosts five research departments.
About the Department
The Economics Department, founded in 1964, is one of
the oldest departments of Government Arts & Science College. The
undergraduate program in economics began in 1970 and the post-graduate program
in 1982. Recently, the Department has been recognised as the research
department by the University of Calicut, which allowed doctoral and
post-doctoral fellows to pursue research on a variety of intriguing topics.
The Department has an impressive succession list of
department heads who have worked tirelessly for the progress of the Department
and College. At present, the department has seven faculty members all of whom
are motivated economists. The Department aims to train the economists of
tomorrow by equipping them with the analytical skills required to comprehend
the complex economic world outside the window.
About the Seminar
In a rapidly evolving global landscape, the relevance of
economics cannot be overstated. However, the traditional neoclassical economic
framework, which has long dominated the field, may not always provide
comprehensive answers to the multifaceted challenges faced by societies today.
This is where heterodox economics steps in, offering a fresh perspective that
challenges conventional wisdom and broadens our understanding of economic
phenomena.
"Heterodox Economics" refers to a diverse range of economic theories and approaches that deviate from the mainstream. These approaches encompass various schools of thought such as Post-Keynesian Economics, Institutional Economics, Feminist Economics, Ecological Economics, and more. What unites these heterodox perspectives is their commitment to questioning established economic dogmas and exploring alternative solutions. So, why does heterodox economics matter in our changing world?
In a world characterized by evolving social, environmental, and economic challenges, heterodox economics serves as a valuable counterbalance to the mainstream. It offers fresh insights, encourages critical thinking, and suggests alternative paths toward a more equitable, sustainable, and just economic future. By embracing the heterodox perspective, we may be able to better navigate the complexities of our changing world.
The basic problem is that the vast majority of economics literature comes from the mainstream tradition. Students are seldom offered alternative approaches. The primary objective of this seminar is to foster insightful discussion, knowledge exchange, and interdisciplinary dialogue among students, scholars, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to advance our understanding of the usefulness of heterodox economics.
