Homestead farming


Homestead farming which is also known as home gardening is a strategy of growing a variety of crops for household needs. It is a local strategy or lifestyle of self sufficiency which is adopted widely by local communities with limited circumstances. It is a subsistence agriculture home preservation of food for one's own family. It provides a regular supply of edible harvest that can be bartered or sold.      

Homestead farming helps in self sufficiency, avoid economic risks, alleviate poverty and malnutrition, helps in nutritional sustainability. It helps in economic sustainability by lessen the risk to extreme price fluctuations due to changes in supply and demand.

This system allow for cultivation of different crops which can provide either a source of additional income for household or function as alternative livelihood especially for the women members of household. And participation of women in homestead farming has provided the much needed gender perspective from social point of view. It helps in enhancing livelihood of large no of unreached and underprivileged people.
